Budapest, the stunning capital of Hungary, is a city full of history, culture, and charm. My girlfriend and I recently spent a weekend exploring this beautiful city, and it was an experience we’ll never forget. We stayed at the Prestige Hotel, which is not just a place to sleep, but a wonderful home base for discovering the rich heritage of Budapest. From the stunning views along the Danube River to the delicious local food, every moment of the trip was filled with wonder.

Our stay at Prestige Hotel in the heart of Pest, one of the two parts of Budapest, was perfect. Pest is the lively, bustling side of the city, filled with charming streets, trendy shops, and delicious restaurants. The hotel’s location was ideal, offering us easy access to major attractions like the Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the famous Danube River. The Prestige Hotel itself combines modern comfort with historic elegance, making it a peaceful haven after a day of sightseeing.

Buda vs. Pest: Exploring Budapest’s Historic Split

Budapest is divided into two distinct parts: Buda and Pest. The Buda side, with its historic charm, is home to the Buda Castle, Fisherman’s Bastion, and winding cobblestone streets. It’s a place filled with history, where you can imagine what life was like centuries ago. Across the river, Pest is the modern and lively part of the city, known for its cafes, restaurants, and vibrant nightlife.

This division between Buda and Pest makes Budapest unique, as it blends the old and the new, the traditional and the modern. Buda’s iconic Castle Hill and Fisherman’s Bastion offer incredible panoramic views of Pest and the Danube River, while Pest is home to stunning architecture, local markets, and a variety of cultural experiences.

The Magic of Hungarian Cuisine: Goulash, Stroganoff, and Funny Food Stories

One of the best parts of our trip was the food. Hungarian cuisine is hearty, flavorful, and comforting. We quickly found our favorite dishes: goulash (a rich beef stew made with paprika) and stroganoff (tender beef in a creamy sauce). We couldn’t get enough of these traditional dishes, but there was a funny twist to our culinary adventure.

For the next three days, my girlfriend was so enchanted with these two dishes that she had them at almost every meal. At first, she tried goulash, then stroganoff, and soon enough, she was in search of the perfect version of each. No matter where we went, she couldn’t resist ordering either goulash or stroganoff – and it became a bit of a running joke! We laughed about how these two dishes seemed to follow us wherever we went. Despite trying other things, she still found herself craving them.

Our Culinary Journey Through Budapest

On our first evening, we dined at Urban Betyár, a cozy restaurant offering a great mix of Hungarian cuisine. The meal cost us 120 USD, including wine and beer – a bit on the expensive side for Budapest, but definitely worth it for the quality and atmosphere.

The next day, we ventured to Bambi Eszpresszó, a charming café along the river. It was a small place with a limited menu, but their toasted chess bread was absolutely delicious. The meal came to 4630 HUF (around 12 USD), which felt like a steal for such a filling snack.

Later, we visited the Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion, two of Budapest’s most iconic landmarks. The views of the city from Fisherman’s Bastion were breathtaking. We also tried the famous chimney cake filled with Nutella – it was the perfect sweet treat to enjoy as we walked around.

That evening, we went to Karcsi Vendéglő, where I had a hearty Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle) and my girlfriend had – you guessed it – goulash and stroganoff again. Our meal came to 15,301 HUF (about 42 USD), but the cozy ambiance made it a memorable experience.

A Magical Boat Tour: Champagne and City Views at Night

On our second evening in Budapest, we decided to make the most of the stunning views along the Danube River by taking a boat tour. As the boat sailed down the river, we were able to see the city in all its glory, lit up by the night lights. The view of the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and Fisherman’s Bastion against the night sky was absolutely mesmerizing.

With a glass of champagne in hand, we soaked in the spectacular sights as the boat gently cruised past the most famous landmarks of Budapest. There’s something truly magical about seeing the city from the water, and the night tour gave us an entirely new perspective of Budapest. The lights twinkling across the river and the buildings illuminated against the dark sky made it feel like we were in a fairytale.

Exploring More of Budapest’s Culinary Delights

The next day, we went to Hungarikum Bisztró for lunch. Despite not having a reservation, we were seated quickly, and the food was delicious and affordable. The meal cost 33,005 HUF (about 90 USD) with wine, and the restaurant treated us to a free shot at the end of the meal – a nice touch!

For dinner, we visited Kisharang Étkezde, a local favorite, where we had a wonderful meal. I enjoyed duck, while my girlfriend stuck with her beloved stroganoff. The bill came to 19,160 HUF (about 52 USD). Afterward, we had drinks at the Four Seasons Hotel bar – a bit pricey but the perfect way to end the evening in style.

Discovering Budapest’s Landmarks

On our third day, we visited the magnificent St. Stephen’s Basilica. The church’s stunning architecture and rich history left us in awe. Afterward, we had lunch at Kispiac Bisztro, where I had the unique and delicious Deer Wellington. It was similar to the traditional Beef Wellington, but with venison. It reminded me of my time in Nara, Japan, where I had some delightful encounters with deer. My girlfriend finally stepped away from goulash and stroganoff and had spareribs, though she still couldn’t resist goulash as a starter!

In the afternoon, we toured the Hungarian Parliament Building, a beautiful symbol of Hungary’s political history. Afterward, we relaxed at the BOATanic Terrace & Bar, enjoying a glass of wine in one of the igloos on the top of a boat, with amazing views of the city.

Final Stop: The Central Market Hall

Our last stop before leaving Budapest was the Central Market Hall, a vibrant marketplace full of local produce, meats, and souvenirs. After exploring the market, we took a taxi to our hotel using the Bolt app, which made traveling around the city convenient and easy.

Our weekend in Budapest was everything we hoped for and more. The city’s combination of stunning historical landmarks, delicious food, and vibrant atmosphere made it a perfect destination for a romantic getaway. From the panoramic views of Buda to the bustling streets of Pest, Budapest offered something for everyone. The food, of course, was one of the highlights, with goulash and stroganoff becoming the stars of our trip.
