2. Sakaimachi Street: Shopping and Treats

Sakaimachi Street is a bustling shopping destination lined with glassware shops, souvenir stores, and delicious snacks. Known for its beautiful music boxes and intricate glass crafts, the street offers a lively atmosphere perfect for strolling. We chose not to purchase anything but instead focused on appreciating the detailed craftsmanship of the displays and the unique vibe of the area. The lively energy and charm of the street made it an enjoyable stop during our visit.

3. Otaru’s Sushi Street: A Seafood Lover’s Paradise

Renowned for its fresh seafood, the city offers some of the best sushi experiences. We indulged in an unforgettable kaisendon, a rice bowl topped with the freshest seafood, costing around 4000 yen. The quality of the fish made it a highlight of our trip, and the vibrant flavors were something we won’t soon forget. For any seafood lover, this dish is a must-try!

4. A Funny Memory: Losing a Phone in Otaru

While exploring the city, we accidentally left our phone in a public toilet. After a brief moment of panic and scrambling to figure out what to do, we contacted the local tourism office. To our relief, they were incredibly helpful and went out of their way to assist us. Not only did they retrieve the phone, but they also made arrangements to send it directly to our next hotel. This experience, though initially stressful, turned into a heartwarming one that really showcased the exceptional kindness and generosity of the locals. It was a reminder of the wonderful connections you can make when traveling, and we couldn’t have been more grateful for their support.

5. A Nostalgic Moment

My girlfriend made a picture with the same sign she did eight years ago, bringing back great memories of her previous visit to Otaru. It was a sentimental and heartwarming moment that made the trip extra special.

6. Laughing at Slippery Streets

February in Otaru is icy, and we saw a lot of people slipping and falling—which, while a little unfortunate for them, was undeniably hilarious to watch! Walking carefully was a necessity, but the occasional slip added some unexpected entertainment to our stroll.

7. A Quirky Chopstick Request

Our friend wanted a custom pair of chopsticks with ‘Hai kurasai’ written on them. When the store owner pointed out that it was grammatically incorrect, he had to explain that it was an inside joke and that he really wanted it that way. The moment was both funny and memorable, adding to our unique experiences in Otaru.

8. Enjoying Daifuku

During our walk through the city, we tried daifuku, a delicious Japanese sweet filled with red bean paste. It was incredibly tasty and a perfect snack for the cold weather.

9. A Quick but Memorable Visit

We spent around two hours exploring Otaru, taking in its sights and enjoying its unique atmosphere before moving on. Despite the short visit, we felt like we experienced the best of what Otaru had to offer.
