Universal Studios Japan Guide: Tickets and Nintendo World

9 min read

Universal Studios Japan (USJ) in Osaka is one of the best theme parks in Asia, and Super Nintendo World is the main reason many visitors go. I went with a friend in February, and the biggest lesson was simple: the rides are great, but the queues are long, even on a calm winter day. To get the most out of a day, you need three things: a dated ticket bought in advance, a plan for Super Nintendo World and, if you want to ride a lot, an Express Pass. For how USJ compares with Disney and Fuji-Q, see my theme parks in Japan guide.

This guide covers tickets, Express Passes, how Super Nintendo World entry works, the best rides, crowds and how to get there from Osaka and Kyoto.

Universal Studios Japan Tickets

USJ uses date based pricing. The main ticket is the 1 Day Studio Pass, and the price changes with how busy the day is expected to be. Weekdays outside school holidays are cheaper, while weekends, Japanese holidays and festive seasons cost more. In late 2026 an adult 1 Day Studio Pass costs roughly 8,400 yen on quiet days to over 10,000 yen on peak days. Children’s tickets are cheaper, and 1.5 day and 2 day passes are also available.

  • Buy online from the official USJ website or app, or through authorised resellers.
  • Tickets are for a specific date, so pick it carefully.
  • Peak dates can sell out, especially around Golden Week, summer, Halloween and Christmas.

Express Pass: Is It Worth It?

Universal Express Passes let you skip the regular queue on selected rides, each at a set time or once during the day. They come in different bundles, often named by the number of rides, such as Express Pass 4 or 7, and many include a guaranteed timed entry to Super Nintendo World.

Prices vary hugely by date and bundle, from several thousand yen to well over 20,000 yen on peak days, on top of your park ticket. They sell out quickly for busy dates.

My honest answer: if you really want to ride the big attractions, you need an Express Pass. We visited in February, usually one of the calmer months, and still waited about an hour for The Flying Dinosaur. Long queues are simply normal at USJ, and Japanese visitors happily stand in line for a long time. Without an Express Pass, you will spend a big part of your day waiting.

An Express Pass is especially worth it if:

  • You only have one day at USJ.
  • You are visiting on a weekend or holiday.
  • You want guaranteed access to Super Nintendo World and Mario Kart.

How Super Nintendo World Entry Works

Super Nintendo World is the most popular area of the park, and on most days access is managed with an Area Timed Entry Ticket. It is free with your park ticket but limited. We did not have a timed entry ticket or a reservation, and there was no chance of getting in. Here is how it usually works:

  1. Enter the park with your Studio Pass.
  2. Open the official USJ app.
  3. Request a timed entry slot for Super Nintendo World right after entering. Popular slots go quickly.
  4. If the area is not busy, there may also be standby entry without a time slot, but do not count on it.

The only way to guarantee entry before your visit is to buy an Express Pass or a ticket package that includes a Super Nintendo World timed entry. If Nintendo is the reason for your trip, sort this out first.

Inside the area, you can buy a Power Up Band. These wristbands connect to the app and let you collect coins and play interactive key challenges around the area. They are optional, but kids and Nintendo fans love them.

Super Nintendo World Rides and Attractions

  • Mario Kart: Koopa’s Challenge: the headline ride, using augmented reality headsets as you race in Mario Kart style. Queues are long, so ride early.
  • Yoshi’s Adventure: a gentle ride suitable for younger kids, with views over the area.
  • Donkey Kong Country: an expansion opened in late 2024 with the Mine Cart Madness coaster, which feels like a mine cart jumping over broken tracks.
  • Kinopio’s Cafe: a themed restaurant with Mario style food. Expect a wait at peak lunch times.

Even without entering the area, you can still see Mario characters in the park. The Super Mario parade float with Luigi rolled right past us on the Hollywood street.

The Best Rides Outside Super Nintendo World

USJ has several other excellent areas, and they are worth your time whether or not you get into Nintendo land:

  • The Flying Dinosaur (Jurassic Park): a coaster where you hang face down below the track. It is by far the most brutal coaster at USJ, and we queued about an hour for it. Only for real thrill seekers.
  • The Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Hogsmeade village, Hogwarts castle and the ride Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Try a butterbeer.
  • Hollywood Dream The Ride: a classic coaster with music. A backwards version runs on some days.
  • Minion Park: the Minion Mayhem ride and plenty of photo spots.
  • Jaws: a boat ride with a lively guide, all in Japanese but easy to follow.
  • Universal Wonderland: a kids area with characters like Snoopy, Hello Kitty and Elmo.

One thing to know about the Harry Potter area: it is exactly the same as at Universal Studios Hollywood in Los Angeles. If you have already been there, you can spend your limited time on other parts of the park. If you have not, it is one of the most beautiful areas at USJ.

Attractions and shows change over time, so check the official website for current openings and closures. If you enjoy Harry Potter, you might also like the Making of Harry Potter studio tour in Tokyo.

Crowds and the Best Time to Visit

  • Quietest: weekdays outside Japanese school holidays, especially in parts of January, February, June and autumn weekdays. Quiet still means queues of around an hour for the top rides.
  • Busiest: weekends, Golden Week, summer holidays, Halloween season and the Christmas and New Year period.
  • Special events: Halloween Horror Nights in autumn and seasonal events are fun but draw big crowds.

Whatever the date, arrive before the official opening time. Gates often open earlier than listed, and the first hour is the best time for the top rides. For a month by month look at crowds at USJ, Tokyo Disney and Fuji-Q, see my Japan theme park crowd calendar.

How to Get to Universal Studios Japan

USJ is next to Universal City Station on the JR Yumesaki Line, also called the JR Sakurajima Line. From Osaka Station it takes about 10 to 15 minutes, either on a direct train or by changing at Nishikujo. From Kyoto, allow about an hour by JR. There are also several official hotels next to the park in Universal City Walk, which are convenient for an early start.

For where to base yourself, see my guide to where to stay in Kyoto and Osaka.

USJ vs Other Theme Parks in Japan

Compared with Fuji-Q Highland, USJ is the prettier park, with much more theming and detail, but you will wait longer. Fuji-Q is all about record breaking coasters, so read my Fuji-Q Highland guide if thrill rides are your main goal. For atmosphere and shows, Tokyo DisneySea is hard to beat, and it is the only DisneySea in the world. My Tokyo Disneyland vs DisneySea guide explains which Disney park to choose.

Tips for a Smooth Day at USJ

  • Install the official app before your trip and link your tickets.
  • Decide on Super Nintendo World before the day: timed entry through the app, or an Express Pass that includes it.
  • Head to your top ride first, while queues are shortest.
  • Eat lunch early or late to avoid queues at restaurants.
  • Single rider lines on some rides can save a lot of time.
  • Dress warmly in winter. You stand still in outdoor queues for a long time, and February days can be grey and cold.
  • Bring a poncho on rainy days, since many queues are outdoors.
  • Lockers are needed for bags on some rides, especially The Flying Dinosaur.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a separate ticket for Super Nintendo World?

Not a separate paid ticket, but on most days you need a free Area Timed Entry Ticket through the official USJ app, or an Express Pass or package that includes timed entry. Without one of these, your chances of getting in are very low.

How much is a ticket to Universal Studios Japan?

Prices are date based. In late 2026 an adult 1 Day Studio Pass costs roughly 8,400 yen on quiet days to over 10,000 yen on peak days. Check the official site for your date.

Is the Express Pass worth it?

If you only have one day and want to ride the big attractions, yes. Even in February, one of the calmer months, I queued about an hour for The Flying Dinosaur. An Express Pass is the only way to ride a lot without spending most of the day in lines.

Is one day enough for Universal Studios Japan?

One day is enough for the highlights if you arrive early and use an Express Pass. Without one, expect to see only a handful of the big rides. Fans who want everything at a slower pace might prefer 1.5 or 2 days.

Is Universal Studios Japan good for kids?

Yes. Universal Wonderland, Minion Park, Yoshi’s Adventure and many shows are great for children. Check the height limits for the bigger rides before you queue.

Can you do USJ as a day trip from Kyoto?

Yes. The trip takes about an hour each way by train, so it is a manageable day trip if you leave early.

Universal Studios Japan or Tokyo DisneySea?

USJ is better for thrill rides, Nintendo and Harry Potter. Tokyo DisneySea is stronger for atmosphere, theming and shows, and it is the only DisneySea in the world. If you can, do both.

USJ is a great addition to any Osaka trip. Combine it with my Osaka travel guide, and if you are travelling with children, read my tips for Tokyo with kids too.
