Ryuoo Ski Park: A Practical Guide to Skiing from Tokyo

Ryuoo Ski Park worked well for our first ski trip together. My girlfriend was learning to ski, and we wanted a trip from Tokyo that combined time on the slopes with a hot bath afterwards. Booking through Orion Tour helped us organise the transport, accommodation and equipment without arranging everything separately.

The part I remember most is how quickly she gained confidence. Ryuoo gave us space to practise and enjoy being in the mountains together. That experience is why I would consider it for another beginner ski trip—but choosing suitable runs matters, because the whole mountain is not beginner terrain.

This guide covers how to plan the journey, compare packages, choose when to visit and avoid booking something that does not fit your needs.

The breathtaking panorama from the Ryuoo Ropeway top station offers sweeping views across the snow-covered mountains of Nagano Prefecture, making it one of the highlights of a winter visit to Ryuoo Ski Park.

Is Ryuoo Ski Park Good for Beginners?

For our trip, yes. My girlfriend made good progress on the easier slopes, and having equipment and accommodation arranged made the experience simpler.

Before heading uphill, look at the current piste map and ask staff which open runs suit your ability. Learning to stop and control your speed matters more than covering as much of the resort as possible. If you are completely new, arrange instruction and confirm the lesson language before booking.

The resort also promotes a dedicated beginner snowboarding programme. That is a snowboarding offer, so do not assume it includes ski instruction. Check the official beginner programme for its current conditions and availability.

Ryuoo also has demanding terrain. The operator describes Kiotoshi Bowl as steep, unprepared terrain with specific access rules. It is not a route for first-time skiers. Consult the official advanced terrain information and follow the resort’s current signs and patrol instructions.

How to Get to Ryuoo Ski Park from Tokyo

A Ski Bus Package

We used Orion Tour for a package trip from Tokyo. Bundling the journey with accommodation and equipment was convenient for us, especially while planning a first ski holiday together. This was not a sponsored trip.

When comparing Orion Tour packages, check the exact departure point, whether the bus travels overnight or during the day, and when you arrive at the resort. A low headline price tells you little about how much useful skiing time you get.

Read the inclusions for the individual package. Do not assume every offer includes an onsen hotel, clothing rental, all meals or the same lift pass. Keep the meeting-point instructions accessible on your phone and allow time to find the bus.

Independent Travel

Yudanaka is a useful station to investigate when planning the last part of the journey. The resort publishes shuttle information on its official access page. Check that the timetable applies to the winter season and your travel date: a summer sightseeing timetable should not be used to plan a ski trip.

Work backwards from the return connection as well as planning the outward journey. If you cannot confirm a suitable winter transfer, contact the resort or your accommodation before buying non-refundable tickets.

For drivers, the resort’s access page also provides road and parking information. Allow for winter conditions rather than treating a map’s estimated drive time as a guarantee.

When to Visit Ryuoo Ski Park

There is no fixed opening day that applies every winter. The announced season dates, actual opening of individual runs and daily lift operations are separate things. Check the official winter website before booking and again before travelling.

An early-season trip can be attractive if you find a good package, but it is a trade-off: fewer open runs or limited snow coverage may matter more than the saving. I would choose it only if the terrain we needed was confirmed open.

If your dates are flexible, compare a weekday stay with a weekend rather than assuming one particular month is always cheapest or quietest. School holidays, snow conditions and the package itself can change the calculation.

How Much Does a Ryuoo Ski Trip Cost?

We spent less than US$400 for the weekend on our trip. That is what we spent at the time, rather than a current package quote. Your total will depend on your dates, accommodation, package inclusions and exchange rate.

Compare the total trip cost rather than just the bus fare or lift pass. Use the official lift-ticket and opening-hours page for current resort prices, then add the items your booking excludes.

Transport: Check the return journey, station transfers and bus departure point.

Lift pass: Check the number of days and which access is included.

Equipment: Check skis or snowboard, boots, poles where applicable, and upgrade charges.

Clothing: Check whether jacket and trousers are included or separately charged.

Lessons: Check the sport, language, duration and group or private format.

Accommodation: Check the room type, meals, distance to the lifts and bath facilities.

Other spending: Allow for lunch, drinks, lockers and any items you need to buy.

A package can be good value when it includes what you actually need. It is less useful if you later have to pay for several extras. Compare equivalent bookings before deciding.

SORA Terrace and the Mountain Views

The mountain panorama was one of the highlights of our visit. If you want to include SORA Terrace, check the current winter access arrangements and allow time around your skiing.

For a companion who does not ski, confirm the available sightseeing ticket or plan directly with the resort. Winter access can differ from the green season. Clear views and a sea of clouds are weather-dependent, so treat them as a bonus rather than the reason the whole trip succeeds or fails.

Staying Overnight and Enjoying an Onsen

For me, a hot bath after skiing is a good reason to stay overnight. It gives the trip a slower pace than fitting the journey and all your skiing into one day.

Before choosing accommodation, confirm whether the advertised bath is a natural onsen, a shared bath or a private facility. Also check meal times, check-in arrangements and how you reach the lifts. A hotel described as being in the area may still require a transfer.

If Japanese baths are new to you, read my onsen etiquette guide. For help choosing a stay, see my onsen and ryokan guide.

A Simple Overnight Trip Plan

Use this as a planning outline, then adapt it to your actual arrival and departure times:

Arrival: Find the rental desk, collect equipment and confirm your lift pass. Leave room for queues and fitting boots.

First ski session: Start on appropriate terrain. For a first-time skier, prioritise a lesson and practising control.

Evening: Return equipment if required, settle into your accommodation and enjoy dinner and the bath.

Second ski session: Practise what you learned rather than feeling obliged to move onto harder runs.

Departure: Allow time for equipment returns, luggage collection and reaching your transport meeting point.

If you want to add the snow monkeys, plan that as a separate excursion with confirmed transport. Being in the same region does not make it an automatic stop on a ski-package itinerary. My Snow Monkey Onsen guide and Nagano guide can help with a longer stay.

What to Pack

Bring waterproof gloves, ski socks, warm layers and suitable eye protection. Check your rental booking before packing: equipment rental and clothing rental are different things. Keep a dry change of clothes available for the journey home.

Bring your booking confirmation and save the transport instructions. Check helmet availability and arrange one if your package does not provide it.

Is Ryuoo Ski Park Worth Visiting?

I would consider Ryuoo again for a ski trip from Tokyo, particularly when travelling with someone learning. Our trip combined enjoyable practice, mountain views and a bath afterwards, and the package made the logistics easier.

The best reason to choose it is that the available terrain, transport and accommodation fit your trip. Check those three things first, then compare the full cost. That is more useful than relying on a promise that it will always be cheap, quiet or fully open from a particular December date.

More Japan Trip Planning

If you are combining skiing with time in the city, my Tokyo travel guide covers places I visit and recommend to friends. If you are considering a separate ski holiday in Hokkaido, read my Grand Hirafu Niseko ski guide for our experience with accommodation, transport and skiing there.

Once you have learned the basics at Ryuoo, Japan has much more to offer. My complete guide to skiing in Japan compares Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Shiga Kogen, Niigata day trips and more, and my Hokkaido ski guide covers Niseko, Rusutsu and every other ski area on the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you visit Ryuoo Ski Park from Tokyo without a car?

Yes. We used an organised ski bus package. If you prefer independent travel, confirm the winter station-to-resort connection before booking.

Is Ryuoo suitable for someone who has never skied?

The easier terrain worked well for my girlfriend while she was learning. Choose suitable open runs and arrange instruction; the resort also has advanced terrain.

When does Ryuoo Ski Park open for skiing?

Opening dates change between seasons, and individual runs depend on snow conditions. Check the current season announcement and daily operating status on the official winter website.

Does every package include rentals and an onsen hotel?

No. Inclusions depend on the individual offer. Check equipment, clothing, meals, accommodation and lift-pass details separately.

Can you combine skiing with a visit to the snow monkeys?

You can plan a longer regional trip, but confirm transport and leave separate time for the park visit. Do not assume your ski bus package includes it. See my Snow Monkey Onsen guide for planning the park visit.
