Mallipo Beach Guide: Surfing, Sunset & Getting There from Seoul

Mallipo Beach is a west-coast beach in Taean, South Korea, known for surfing and sunsets. I would choose it for a night by the sea, especially if you want time for a lesson or an evening walk. From Seoul, the main planning issue is the connection through Taean and getting back after sunset.

We visited during the pandemic, when the beachfront was quiet. The sea view from our accommodation and the old amusement rides stayed in my memory, as did a difficult return journey. This guide keeps those experiences in their original context and adds current planning sources. It does not assume the town still looks exactly as it did then.

How to get to Mallipo Beach from Seoul

I would plan the journey in two legs: Seoul to Taean, then Taean to Mallipo. Check date-specific intercity services on Tmoney’s bus booking site or Bustago. Search for 태안 as the destination and check exactly which Seoul terminal the ticket uses. Do not travel to a terminal simply because it is the one you used on a previous Korean trip.

I have not verified a bookable fare and departure for your travel date, so I am not publishing a fixed Seoul bus price or promising a direct service to the beach. Add the connection wait, the local journey and time to find your accommodation when comparing the trip with another destination.

For the local leg, Taean County’s Sowon-bound timetable lists route 210 via Mallipo to Cheollipo. Show the driver 만리포해수욕장 and confirm the correct stop. A taxi from Taean is an alternative if the bus timing does not work; ask for the expected fare before starting.

The return timetable deserves a separate check. The county’s Taean-bound timetable lists services departing Cheollipo and passing through Mallipo, including route 941. Its printed times are departures from Cheollipo, not from the Mallipo stop. Confirm the actual Mallipo boarding time and location locally. Do not assume the return route is also numbered 210.

Our return journey: what I would do differently

On our trip, we joined two other Korean guests and shared a long-distance taxi back to the city. That solved our return problem, but it was an arrangement we made on that visit. I would not rely on finding other travelers to share a fare, or describe it as a local tradition.

• Check the last suitable connection from the beach before buying the intercity return ticket.
• Leave a buffer at Taean rather than plan a tight transfer.
• Save your accommodation’s address and ask whether staff can help call a taxi.
• If staying for sunset makes the return awkward, stay overnight instead of improvising at the last minute.

What to do at Mallipo Beach

Stay for sunset. This was the part of the setting I enjoyed most. Walk along the beachfront or choose a sea-facing place to sit. Reflections depend on the tide, light and weather; the photograph above shows our view, not a guaranteed scene.

Try a surf lesson. The nickname “Mallifornia” reflects the surf scene. Taean’s tourism office describes beginner lessons at MLP Surf. Treat that as a lead to contact, then confirm current operation, lesson language and the conditions for your date. I am not claiming to have taken a lesson with this school.

• Ask what the price includes: instructor time, board, wetsuit, shower and any locker.
• Confirm whether a beginner lesson will run in the forecast conditions.
• Ask what happens if weather cancels the session before you pay.

Walk the beachfront. You do not need to surf to enjoy the sea view. On our visit, the amusement rides added an old-fashioned feel to the shoreline. I would treat them as part of our photographs, rather than plan around rides whose current opening hours I have not confirmed.

When to visit: swimming, surfing or a quiet walk

For swimming, plan around the official bathing season and supervised hours. These are announced each year. Check the latest Taean beach information and seasonal notices rather than reuse dates from an old trip report.

For a walk or sunset, I would also consider spring or autumn with a suitable forecast. For surfing, ask your chosen school about the day’s conditions. A quiet beach is not proof that it is safe to enter the water. Taean notes a substantial tidal range here; follow local signs and the instructions of beach staff.

Our pandemic-era stay is not a reliable guide to present-day summer crowds. If you want a quieter visit, I would compare a weekday with a weekend, check recent accommodation reviews and avoid building the trip around the assumption that the town will be empty.

Where to stay and how long to allow

For a short stay, I would favor a room within walking distance of the beach over a cheaper place elsewhere in Taean. Our view was a highlight, so I would check whether “sea view” means an unobstructed view from the booked room rather than a shared terrace or a different room category.

• Check the walking route to the beach and the bus stop.
• Read recent comments about cleanliness, noise and bedding.
• Confirm check-in, luggage storage and any parking charge.
• If booking a surf package, check whether accommodation and equipment are included.

One night is my preferred plan for an unhurried visit. Arrive, settle in, walk or take a lesson, then stay for sunset. Keep the next morning flexible and return with time to spare. A day trip can work with good connections, but I would choose it for a beach walk rather than pack in surfing, dinner and sunset.

Food and budget: what to check before ordering

Seafood is part of the area’s appeal. Taean’s tourism page highlights dishes such as seasoned skate, grilled sea eel and prawns. Read menus before choosing a restaurant, especially whether a price is per person, per platter or for a set with a minimum number of diners.

If you see 게국지 (ge-gukji), 간장게장 (soy-marinated crab) or 칼국수 (noodle soup), ask what the restaurant’s version includes. These are menu terms to help you order, not dishes I am claiming we ate at a particular restaurant. I would avoid calling unnamed places the best in town.

Build your budget from four actual quotes: return transport, accommodation, any surf lesson and meals. Keep a taxi contingency if traveling without a car. I do not have a receipt or verified current menu prices to turn our visit into a precise per-person budget.

Our honest impression of the town

The beach view and the surrounding streets gave us different impressions. We photographed litter on a side street, and parts of the town felt worn on that visit. That is worth showing honestly, but it does not justify saying the whole town is dirty today or that its residents do not care about cleanliness.

I would judge a new booking by recent reviews and location rather than this older photograph alone. If you want a polished resort stay, compare properties carefully. If you mainly want the coastline, a surf lesson and time to watch the evening light, Mallipo is a place I would consider.

Add Cheollipo Arboretum if you have more time

Cheollipo Arboretum, also spelled Chollipo, is an option for a separate garden visit nearby. Check its current admission, hours and transport before adding it. Keep enough time for the return bus rather than treating a second attraction as something you can always fit in.
