If you are visiting South Korea without a visa, you may need a K-ETA, the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization, before you board your flight. Many travellers only find out at the airport check-in counter, which is stressful. As a Swiss citizen, I need one too. This guide explains who needs a K-ETA, how much it costs, how to apply on the official website, how long it is valid and what to do if it is rejected.
K-ETA: The Quick Facts
- What: an online travel authorisation for visa-free visitors to South Korea.
- Cost: 10,000 won plus a card processing fee, not refundable.
- Processing: usually within 72 hours; apply at least 72 hours before boarding.
- Validity: generally 3 years, but not beyond your passport’s expiry.
- Where to apply: only on the official website k-eta.go.kr or the official K-ETA app.
Who Needs a K-ETA?
Nationals of countries that can enter Korea without a visa generally need a K-ETA. However, Korea has temporarily exempted visitors from a list of 22 countries and regions from the K-ETA requirement, currently until the end of 2026. These include, among others, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, the UK, the USA, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.
Switzerland is not on the exemption list, so Swiss travellers need a K-ETA. The list and the end date can change, so always check the official K-ETA website before you book.

How Much Does a K-ETA Cost?
The fee is 10,000 won plus a small card processing fee, paid by credit card during the application. The fee is not refunded, even if your application is rejected. Beware of unofficial agency websites that look official and charge much higher fees; use only k-eta.go.kr or the official app.
How to Apply for a K-ETA
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Go to the official website k-eta.go.kr or download the official K-ETA app. |
| 2 | Enter your passport details exactly as in your passport. |
| 3 | Upload a passport-style photo and answer questions about your trip, job and contact details. |
| 4 | Pay 10,000 won plus the processing fee by card. |
| 5 | Wait for the result, usually within 72 hours, by email and on the website. |
| 6 | Keep a screenshot of the approval; airlines check K-ETA status at check-in. |
Apply at least 72 hours before your flight, ideally a week or more ahead. There is no official express service.

How Long Is a K-ETA Valid?
A K-ETA is generally valid for 3 years from approval for multiple visits, but never beyond your passport’s expiry date. If you get a new passport or change your name or nationality, you need a new K-ETA. Each stay must still respect the visa-free period for your nationality.
K-ETA and the e-Arrival Card
Korea has introduced an online e-Arrival Card that visitors can fill in before landing. Travellers with an approved K-ETA are generally exempt from submitting the arrival card, because the K-ETA already contains the information. If you are in an exempt country and travel without a K-ETA, check whether you need to submit the e-Arrival Card before your flight.
What If My K-ETA Is Rejected?
- You cannot enter Korea visa-free with a rejected K-ETA.
- Check that all details were correct; you can reapply, but you pay the fee again.
- If it is rejected again, apply for a visa at a Korean embassy or consulate.
