Narai Station: A Step Back in Time

Our journey began at Narai Station, a charming stop that took us straight into the past. Known for its beautifully preserved old village, Narai is a former post town along the Nakasendo, a historical route connecting Kyoto and Tokyo. Walking through the narrow streets, we felt like we had stepped into a different era. The traditional wooden houses, the old shops, and the lingering scent of history made this stop incredibly special. It’s easy to get lost in the peaceful atmosphere of Narai, where time seems to slow down, and the hustle and bustle of the modern world fades away.

Wasabi Farm near Matsumoto: A Unique Experience on Two Wheels

Next, we headed to a nearby wasabi farm, known for its pristine, organically grown wasabi that thrives in the cool, fast-flowing waters. Instead of taking a taxi or bus, we rented bicycles at the local train station. The process was refreshingly simple—no need for ID cards or passports; the kind man at the rental shop simply trusted us. This was a stark contrast to our experiences in places like Naoshima, where regulations were more stringent. He handed us a map and attached it to the bike, which felt like having our own offline Google Maps as we cycled through the countryside. The landscape was stunning, and the calm river flowing alongside us reminded me of my hometown—before the government came in and changed everything. It was a moment of nostalgia, seeing the river so undisturbed and pristine, much like how it used to be back home.

Exploring Naoshima: Japan’s Art Island Adventure

The wasabi farm itself was a sight to behold. The vibrant green fields, with their crystal-clear water channels, were a reminder of how nature can provide us with such unique flavors. We walked through the farm, learning about the meticulous process of growing wasabi, and of course, enjoyed tasting the freshest wasabi in its purest form. It was an experience that connected us with the land and its traditions.

The highlight of our trip was a visit to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most iconic and beautiful castles. Known as the “Crow Castle” due to its black exterior, Matsumoto Castle is a stunning example of traditional Japanese architecture.
