South Korea is a land of “Pali-Pali” (빨리빨리), the famous “hurry-hurry” culture that helped transform the country from the ruins of war into one of the world’s most technologically advanced societies in just a few decades. Yet despite this relentless speed, Korea remains deeply rooted in Confucian traditions, social hierarchy, and centuries-old customs. It is a country where ultra-modern skyscrapers tower above hidden Hanok villages, where 24-hour convenience stores stand beside ancient palace walls, and where students study until sunrise beneath neon lights that never seem to turn off.
For many travelers, South Korea begins and ends with K-Pop, Korean BBQ, and viral TikTok cafés. But the real Korea reveals itself slowly: in the steam rising from a late-night Tteokbokki stall in Sinchon, in the silence of a Joseon-era palace at sunrise, in the intense atmosphere of Seoul’s university districts, and in the endless apartment towers that stretch toward the mountains surrounding the capital. Seoul is not just a tourist destination; it is one of the most competitive, digitally connected, and fast-evolving megacities in the world.
I created this Seoul Insider Guide from the perspective of someone who experienced the city not as a short-term tourist, but as a temporary resident and international student. My journey in Seoul began during the COVID-19 pandemic while studying at Ewha Womans University, one of Korea’s most prestigious universities. Unlike most visitors who experience Seoul at full intensity, I arrived during one of the strangest periods in modern Korean history. The city’s famous energy had been muted by restrictions, empty classrooms, QR-code check-ins, and mask mandates. In many ways, this unusual moment allowed me to experience a side of Seoul that very few foreigners ever saw.
Instead of packed tourist crowds, I wandered through nearly empty streets in Sinchon and Hongdae. I experienced Korea’s world-class digital health systems firsthand, navigated quarantine-era bureaucracy, and watched how one of the most technologically advanced countries on earth handled a global crisis with remarkable efficiency. Living in Seoul during this transitional era gave me a much deeper understanding of Korean society beyond the polished image often shown online.
Over the years, including multiple extended stays and return trips across South Korea, I have spent well over a year exploring the country as both a traveler and a resident. I lived in the heart of Sinchon, the legendary university district connecting Ewha, Yonsei, and Sogang University, an area that perfectly captures the pressure, ambition, and youthful energy driving modern Korea. From late-night convenience store meals with students to navigating Seoul’s brutal housing market and understanding the reality behind Korea’s academic culture, I experienced parts of daily life that most travel guides completely overlook.
My connection to Korea also became academic and professional. In 2023, I was accepted into Yonsei University for a Master’s program in Computer Science, giving me firsthand insight into the elite SKY university system that dominates Korean education and corporate recruitment. Although I ultimately chose Waseda University in Japan, the process of preparing for Yonsei allowed me to deeply research Korea’s highly competitive tech ecosystem, startup culture, and AI-driven future. In 2023, I stood at a major life junction: I was accepted to Yonsei University (one-third of the prestigious “SKY” trio) to pursue my Master’s in Computer Science. While I ultimately chose the path toward Waseda in Tokyo, my time living in the heart of Sinchon—the legendary student corridor connecting Ewha, Yonsei, and Sogang—left an indelible mark on my understanding of Korean society. What fascinated me most about Seoul was the contrast between outward perfection and the immense pressure hidden underneath it. Living inside this environment gave me a much deeper appreciation for the forces that transformed South Korea from one of the poorest countries in the world into a global cultural and technological powerhouse. Behind the polished K-Pop image and futuristic skyline lies a society built on discipline, sacrifice, and an almost unmatched drive for self-improvement. Understanding this tension between glamour and pressure is, in my opinion, essential to truly understanding modern Korea.
