Seoul is a huge city of very different neighbourhoods: palaces and hanok houses in the old centre, students and street performers in Hongdae, shopping in Myeongdong and glass towers in Gangnam. Choosing the right area saves you hours on the subway. I lived in Seoul for a year as an exchange student in Sinchon, and this guide explains the best areas to stay, who each one suits and how they connect.
Where to Stay in Seoul: The Short Answer
- First visit, shopping and food: Myeongdong.
- Nightlife and young atmosphere: Hongdae.
- Budget and local student life: Sinchon.
- History and palaces: Jongno, Insadong and Anguk.

Myeongdong: The Easiest Base for a First Visit
Myeongdong is central, full of shops, cosmetics stores and street food stalls, and close to Namsan and N Seoul Tower. Two subway lines and Seoul Station nearby make it easy to reach the palaces, Hongdae and the airport. It is very touristy, but for a first trip that convenience is worth a lot.
Hongdae: Nightlife and Creativity
Hongdae, around Hongik University, is Seoul’s youth and music district, with street performers, small clubs, cafes and vintage shops. Hongik University Station is on the AREX airport line, so you can reach Incheon Airport without changing trains. If you like going out, this is the place.

Sinchon: Where I Lived
Sinchon is next to Hongdae and home to Yonsei, Ewha and Sogang universities. It is cheaper and more local, with endless restaurants, cafes and bars aimed at students. I lived here during my exchange year and still think it is one of the best value areas in Seoul. Read my Sinchon Seoul guide for my favourite food spots.
Jongno, Insadong and Anguk: Palaces and Hanok
The old centre around Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces is perfect if you love history. Insadong has tea houses and craft shops, and Bukchon Hanok Village shows traditional houses on the hillside. Some hanok guesthouses here offer a traditional stay. Bukchon is a residential area: in the most famous lanes (the “red zone”), tourists may only visit between 10:00 and 17:00, and fines apply outside those hours. Be quiet and respectful.

Gangnam: Modern Seoul
South of the Han River, Gangnam is glass towers, luxury shopping, cosmetic clinics and K-pop agencies. Hotels are modern and the nightlife is upscale. It is a good base for business travellers or if you visit COEX and Lotte World Tower, but the historic sights are 30 to 40 minutes away by subway.
Itaewon, Seongsu and Dongdaemun
- Itaewon: international restaurants and bars, close to Namsan. Good if you want global food and nightlife.
- Seongsu: Seoul’s trendy cafe and pop-up store district, often compared with Brooklyn. Few hotels, but great for a day.
- Dongdaemun: fashion markets that stay open late and the futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza.
