When is the best time to visit Japan? The honest answer: it depends on what you want to see, how much heat or cold you can handle and how much you hate crowds. I lived in Tokyo for three years and experienced every season, from cherry blossom picnics and sticky July evenings to quiet, sunny winter days. This guide goes through Japan month by month, with weather, festivals, crowds and prices, so you can pick the right time for your trip.

Best Time to Visit Japan: The Short Answer

  • Best overall: late March to May and October to November. For early spring, see my guide to Japan in March.
  • Cherry blossoms: late March to early April in Tokyo and Kyoto. My Japan in April guide covers weather, events and crowds that month.
  • Autumn leaves: mid-November to early December in Tokyo and Kyoto.
  • Cheapest and quietest: January (after New Year) to February, plus early June.
  • Skiing and snow: January to February.
  • Avoid if possible: Golden Week (around 29 April to 5 May), Obon (mid-August) and New Year, when Japanese people travel and prices peak.

Spring (March to May): Cherry Blossom Season

Spring is the most famous season in Japan. In Tokyo, cherry blossoms usually open around 24 March and reach full bloom around the end of March; Kyoto follows a few days later, with full bloom typically in early April. Further north, Tohoku and Hokkaido bloom in April and May. Parks fill with hanami picnics, and the whole country turns pink for about one to two weeks. For the month after the blossoms, see my guide to Japan in May.

The downside: it is the busiest and most expensive time of the year, and hotels in Kyoto sell out months ahead. Golden Week, a chain of national holidays around 29 April to 5 May, is the second peak. My Tokyo cherry blossom guide and best sakura spots in Tokyo help you plan. Here are the Golden Week 2027 dates and all other national holidays.

June to Mid-July: Rainy Season

The rainy season (tsuyu) starts in early June in most of Honshu and normally ends around mid to late July in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. Okinawa’s rainy season comes earlier, from May to late June, and Hokkaido has no official rainy season at all. It does not rain all day every day, but expect grey skies, humidity and regular showers. The advantages: fewer tourists, lower prices and beautiful hydrangeas at temples. I explain how to travel during the wet and stormy months in my guide to rainy season, typhoons and winter in Japan.

Summer (Mid-July to August): Festivals and Heat

Japanese summers are hot and humid. Tokyo’s average August high is about 31°C, and recent summers regularly pass 35°C. In return, summer is the season of fireworks festivals, matsuri, beer gardens and the Mount Fuji climbing season, which usually runs from early July to early September. Obon in mid-August is a big domestic travel week, with full trains and higher prices. Hokkaido is the coolest place to escape the heat.

September: Typhoons and Late Summer

Typhoon season runs roughly from June to October, with August and September the most active months. On average about 11 typhoons come close to Japan each year and about 3 make landfall. Most of the time they cause a day or two of rain and train delays, not more, but keep your plans flexible and buy travel insurance.

Autumn (October to November): The Best Weather

Autumn is my favourite season in Japan. The heat is gone, skies are clear and the air is fresh. October is perfect for hiking and city walks. Autumn leaves start in Hokkaido in October and reach Tokyo and Kyoto from mid-November to early December. Kyoto’s temples with red maples are stunning, and just as crowded as in cherry blossom season, so go early in the morning. Month by month details are in my guide to Japan in September, October and November.

Winter (December to February): Snow, Lights and Low Prices

Winter in Tokyo is cold but usually sunny and dry, with daytime temperatures around 10°C. It is a great time for city trips, clear views of Mount Fuji and winter illuminations like the Asakusa winter lights and Christmas in Roppongi, and the whole season is in my guide to Christmas in Japan. Hokkaido and the Japan Alps get huge amounts of snow: Sapporo averages more than a metre of snowfall in January. This is the season for skiing in Japan, the Sapporo Snow Festival in February and steaming onsen. Avoid the New Year period (around 29 December to 3 January) if you want open shops and museums. If you are travelling at the start of winter, see my guide to Japan in December.
