Is the JR Pass Worth It? Prices, Routes and Cheaper Alternatives

For years, the Japan Rail Pass was the default for every Japan trip. That changed when the price rose by around 70% in 2023. Today the JR Pass is still great for some routes, but for many travellers single tickets or a regional pass are cheaper. This guide explains current JR Pass prices, what it covers, the rules for the fastest Shinkansen and simple examples to decide whether it is worth it for your trip.

Is the JR Pass Worth It? The Short Answer

  • Worth it: if you take several long Shinkansen trips within 7, 14 or 21 days, for example Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima and back.
  • Not worth it: for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka only, or if you mostly stay in one region.
  • Price: ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days (ordinary car, official site).
  • Alternative: regional passes like Kansai, Kyushu, Hokkaido or Hokuriku, or single tickets bought in advance.

7 days¥50,000¥70,000
14 days¥80,000¥110,000
21 days¥100,000¥140,000
Adult prices on the official JR Pass website. Children aged 6 to 11 pay half. Passes bought through travel agencies abroad can cost more.

You can buy the pass on the official JR Pass website, through authorised travel agencies, or at selected major stations in Japan. You can also compare JR Pass and regional rail pass offers online.

What the JR Pass Covers

  • All JR trains nationwide, including most Shinkansen (Hikari, Kodama, Hayabusa and others).
  • JR local and rapid trains, including the Yamanote Line in Tokyo.
  • Seat reservations on covered trains at no extra cost.
  • JR buses on some local routes and the JR ferry to Miyajima.
  • Not included: subways, private railways (like Odakyu, Tobu, Keisei, Hankyu) and city buses.

Nozomi and Mizuho Trains

The fastest Shinkansen trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines, Nozomi and Mizuho, are not included in the basic pass. Pass holders can now ride them by buying a special supplement ticket, quoted at around ¥4,960 for Tokyo to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka and about ¥6,500 for Tokyo to Hiroshima. Alternatively, take the Hikari, which is only slightly slower and fully covered.

If you focus on Kansai, a regional pass or simple IC card fares are often enough. For Kyushu, see my Kyushu road trip and the Beppu onsen guide.

How to Use the JR Pass

  • Buy online or through an agency, then activate the pass in Japan with your passport (you need “Temporary Visitor” status).
  • Many automatic gates now read the pass ticket; otherwise use the staffed gate.
  • Reserve seats at ticket machines, ticket offices or online, especially in busy seasons.
  • Large suitcases on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen need an oversized baggage seat reservation.

Frequently Asked Questions About the JR Pass

How much is the JR Pass?

On the official website, the ordinary pass costs ¥50,000 for 7 days, ¥80,000 for 14 days and ¥100,000 for 21 days. The Green Car pass costs ¥70,000, ¥110,000 and ¥140,000.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?

Usually not. A return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka costs less with single tickets than a 7-day pass.

Can I ride the Nozomi with a JR Pass?

Only with an extra Nozomi supplement ticket. Without it, take the Hikari or Kodama, which are covered.

Does the JR Pass work on the Tokyo subway?

No. It covers JR lines like the Yamanote Line, but not Tokyo Metro or Toei subways.

Where can I buy the JR Pass?

On the official JR Pass website, through authorised travel agencies, or at selected major stations in Japan.

When does the JR Pass start?

On the start date you choose when activating it in Japan. A 7-day pass is valid for 7 consecutive days, not 7 travel days.

Are there cheaper regional passes?

Yes. Kansai, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Hokuriku and JR East all have regional passes that are often better value if you stay in one area.

Can residents of Japan use the JR Pass?

No. It is only for visitors with “Temporary Visitor” status, with some exceptions for Japanese nationals living abroad.

Final Thoughts

The JR Pass is no longer an automatic buy. Add up your planned Shinkansen trips first: if they cost more than the pass, buy it; if not, use single tickets, a regional pass and an IC card. For many first-time routes, that saves a lot of money.
