Visiting Hiroshima is always a fascinating experience, and one of its hidden gems is the famous Okonomimura, often referred to as the “Okonomiyaki Tower.” This multi-story food haven is home to numerous restaurants specializing in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a savory Japanese pancake layered with ingredients such as cabbage, noodles, egg, and various toppings. My recent trip to Hiroshima led me to this incredible culinary destination, and the experience was unforgettable.
Meeting an Old Friend in Hiroshima
The main reason for my trip to Hiroshima was to meet an old school friend from Switzerland. He currently lives in Korea but happened to be in Hiroshima during my visit. It was the perfect opportunity to catch up and explore the city together. After discussing our travel plans, we decided to visit Okonomimura, as we had both heard of its reputation for serving some of the best Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki in Japan.
The Journey to Hiroshima
I traveled to Hiroshima by airplane, and though I had hoped to capture some breathtaking views of Mount Fuji along the way, I was not seated by the window. While I could still catch a glimpse of the iconic mountain, I was unable to take any photos. Nonetheless, the flight was smooth, and the anticipation of visiting Hiroshima kept my excitement high.
What is Okonomimura?

Okonomimura, meaning “Okonomiyaki Village,” is a multi-floor complex dedicated entirely to the art of okonomiyaki. It is located in the vibrant Shintenchi district of Hiroshima and features more than 20 different food stalls and restaurants, each offering a unique take on the beloved dish. Unlike Osaka-style okonomiyaki, which involves mixing the ingredients together before cooking, Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is prepared in layers, creating a distinct and flavorful experience.
The Experience at the Okonomiyaki Tower
Upon arriving at Okonomimura, my friend and I were overwhelmed by the delicious aroma of sizzling batter, fresh vegetables, and various sauces. The lively atmosphere was filled with locals and tourists alike, all eager to indulge in Hiroshima’s specialty dish. We walked through the different floors, scanning the menus and peeking into the open kitchens where skilled chefs prepared the okonomiyaki right in front of their customers.
After much deliberation, we settled on a cozy stall with a welcoming chef who was eager to explain the process of making Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. We chose the classic version, which included pork, cabbage, egg, and yakisoba noodles, all topped with a generous drizzle of okonomiyaki sauce and mayonnaise. Watching the chef skillfully prepare our meal on the hot teppan (iron griddle) was mesmerizing.
The first bite was an explosion of flavors – the combination of the crispy base, soft noodles, and rich sauce was simply perfect. My friend and I agreed that this was one of the best meals we had eaten in Japan. Each stall in Okonomimura has its own special touch, and I could easily see why locals and travelers return time and time again to try different variations.
More Than Just Food: The Culture of Okonomimura
Beyond the incredible food, Okonomimura also offers a glimpse into the culinary traditions of Hiroshima. The chefs take great pride in their craft, and many of the restaurants are family-run businesses that have been serving okonomiyaki for generations. Engaging with the chefs and hearing their stories made the experience even more enriching. The casual, friendly atmosphere made it easy to strike up conversations with both locals and fellow travelers, creating a warm and welcoming environment.
Hiroshima: The Home of the Best Oysters
In addition to its famous okonomiyaki, Hiroshima is also known for having some of the best oysters in the world. The city’s coastal location and pristine waters make it an ideal place for cultivating high-quality oysters, which are enjoyed both raw and cooked in a variety of dishes. If you visit Hiroshima, trying its renowned oysters is an absolute must.
Fun Fact: The Rare Sight of Trash Bins in Japan
One surprising discovery in Hiroshima was the presence of trash bins—something that is quite rare in Japan. Recently, about 10 public trash bins have been installed in Hiroshima, a significant development in a country where finding a bin can be nearly impossible. However, it seems that the people of Hiroshima are not entirely sure how to use them properly, as they are often found either overflowing or filled with the wrong types of waste. It’s an interesting and amusing aspect of daily life in Hiroshima that visitors may notice.
Final Thoughts
My visit to Okonomimura was one of the highlights of my trip to Hiroshima. Sharing a delicious meal with an old friend in such a unique setting was an experience I will never forget. If you ever find yourself in Hiroshima, I highly recommend visiting this legendary food destination. Whether you are a fan of okonomiyaki or trying it for the first time, Okonomimura offers an authentic and unforgettable taste of Hiroshima’s culinary culture.
