Planning an Ishigaki and Miyakojima itinerary? For a first trip, I would choose Ishigaki if you want snorkeling plus excursions to nearby islands, and Miyakojima if beaches and coastal drives are the main priority. With about a week, you can combine both. With only a long weekend, I would stay on one island and spend less time moving between airports.

My girlfriend, a friend and I traveled to Ishigaki and then Miyakojima. Later, my friend and I continued to Naha. Snorkeling and our stay at Happy Island Hostel were the highlights. Naha brought history and nightlife, but its city beach did not give us the same experience as the smaller islands.

Below is the route I would recommend for a week on both islands, followed by what we enjoyed and what I would skip. The itinerary is a suggested plan based on our experience.

Ishigaki vs Miyakojima: which island should you choose?

Your priorityMy suggested choiceWhat to consider
A varied island tripIshigakiUse the port for nearby Yaeyama excursions; allow separate time for snorkeling.
Beaches and coastal drivesMiyakojimaPlan your transport before choosing a remote place to stay.
Both islandsAbout a week or moreCheck the flight between them first and treat transfer day as travel time.
History and city nightlifeAdd NahaNaha is on Okinawa’s main island, separate from Ishigaki and Miyakojima.

Both islands worked for us as snorkeling destinations. I would not choose solely on a promise of turtles or manta rays. A good operator, suitable conditions and enough flexibility in your schedule matter more than a promotional photograph.

How to travel between Ishigaki, Miyakojima and Naha

We flew from Ishigaki to Miyakojima. Do not book this route expecting an ordinary passenger ferry between the two. Check the actual flight options for your dates, including whether a connection is needed. The official Miyako Island guide explains air access, while the official ferry guide covers local island routes.

Ferries from Ishigaki to places such as Taketomi and Iriomote belong to the Yaeyama network. They are useful for excursions from an Ishigaki base, but they do not make Naha, Ishigaki and Miyakojima one interchangeable ferry itinerary.

  • Check the arrival and departure airport on every ticket. Miyako Airport and Shimojishima Airport are different airports.
  • Include baggage charges, airport transfers and any rental-car pickup in the comparison.
  • Book the inter-island leg before committing to nonrefundable stays on both islands.
  • Avoid booking a snorkeling excursion immediately after arrival. A delayed flight can leave little time to reach the meeting point.
  • On separate tickets, allow a generous connection buffer. A short flight still involves check-in, baggage collection and ground transport.

A suggested 7-day Ishigaki and Miyakojima itinerary

DaySuggested planPlanning note
1Arrive on Ishigaki, settle in and explore townKeep the first day light.
2Guided snorkeling excursionAsk about pickup, equipment and weather cancellation.
3Kabira Bay and a coastal outing, or one nearby islandChoose one main outing rather than squeeze everything in.
4Fly to Miyakojima and collect transportTreat this as a transfer day.
5Beach time and a guided snorkeling excursionFollow the operator’s choice of location for conditions.
6A coastal drive, bridge views and a relaxed mealLeave this day flexible if the sea excursion needs moving.
7Return flightAllow time for rental-car return and airport check-in.

For three or four days, choose one island and use the same idea: arrival, one booked ocean activity, one flexible sightseeing day and departure. For eight to ten days, I would add a Naha stay or give each island more breathing room. More islands are not automatically a better holiday.

Where to stay on Ishigaki and Miyakojima

For this itinerary, I would choose one base on each island. Moving accommodation again for a three-night stay adds packing and check-in time without necessarily improving the trip.

Ishigaki: snorkeling, the harbor and time to settle in

Our first day on Ishigaki was deliberately slow. We enjoyed breakfast at our hotel, explored town and settled into the trip. Near the ferry terminal, we found a Pokémon manhole cover. It was a small stop rather than a reason to cross the island, but it made a fun addition to a harbor walk. If you enjoy these details, my Japanese manhole-cover guide explains the broader idea.

The snorkeling excursion was the main event. We saw tropical fish and coral, and the clear water made being out on the boat worthwhile before we even got in. That describes the conditions on our outing. It is not a promise that every departure has calm seas or the same visibility.

Ishigaki is the gateway to the Yaeyama Islands, not their largest island. For an additional sightseeing day, Kabira Bay and Tamatorizaki Observatory are options in the official Ishigaki guide. Kabira Bay is for sightseeing and glass-bottom boats, not swimming or snorkeling from the beach.

What disappointed us on Ishigaki

Trash in the Forest (Ishigaki)

Away from the beaches, we saw discarded tires and other rubbish in several forest areas. The contrast with the ocean scenery was disappointing. It was a less attractive side of the island that we had not expected to see.

We took our own rubbish with us. My guide to rubbish bins in Japan covers the practical issue of carrying waste until you can dispose of it properly.

Miyakojima: our stay at Happy Island Hostel

Happy Island Hostel was one of the most memorable parts of the trip. The host, also called Max, and his cat Happy made us feel welcome. We spent evenings with other travelers, shared beers and enjoyed a BBQ. Max prepared freshly caught fish, including sashimi. The social atmosphere mattered as much as the accommodation itself.

Fish hunted & cooked by host Max

A regular guest kept everyone entertained with his stories. Those encounters are why I would consider a hostel again for a similar trip. Check the property’s current room options and house rules before booking, especially any age restrictions.

Getting around Miyakojima and choosing where to stay

I strongly recommend considering a rental car for a trip built around scattered beaches and viewpoints. Read my guide to renting a car in Japan first, especially before paying for a booking. Confirm that your documents meet the rental company’s requirements, that pickup matches your airport and that you understand the return arrangements.

Without a car, choose your base around the activities you can actually reach. A beachside room can look ideal online while making dinner and tour pickup awkward. Ask the accommodation about local transport and ask each tour whether it collects guests from your area. Check the return journey as carefully as the outbound one.

  • For a social stay, compare hostels and guesthouses by room type and house rules.
  • For a beach stay, check whether access is public, supervised and available during your travel dates.
  • For a base in town, compare nearby restaurants and actual bus stops.
  • For any remote stay, confirm transport, parking if needed and the cost of reaching your booked activities.

For a driving day, the official tourism guide lists Yonaha Maehama Beach, Higashi-Hennazaki Cape and bridges to Kurima, Ikema and Irabu. Pick a small group of stops, rather than turning the day into a checklist. A viewpoint visit is different from a swimming recommendation; check signs and local conditions before entering the water.

Snorkeling with turtles on Miyakojima

We arranged another snorkeling excursion through Max at the hostel, who connected us with local guides. We saw sea turtles, fish, a sea snake and an octopus. The turtles were the highlight. We kept our distance from the animals rather than trying to touch or follow them.

For your own outing, ask how much time is spent in the water, whether it is boat-based or shore-based, and whether beginners are welcome. Also check equipment, flotation aids, pickup location and what happens if the operator cancels.

Clear water can hide hazards. Check the official Okinawa sea-safety guide and follow local warnings. Do not stand on coral, handle wildlife or enter an unfamiliar swimming area simply because another visitor is doing it.

Food on Miyakojima: garlic shrimp and taco rice

Garlic Shrimps at HARRY'S Shrimp Truck
Garlic Shrimps at HARRY’S Shrimp Truck

A member of the hostel staff recommended garlic shrimp and taco rice. We tried the garlic shrimp at HARRY’S Shrimp Truck and enjoyed it. Check the business’s current opening information before making a special journey.

Taco rice combines seasoned meat, vegetables and cheese over rice. I initially expected something closer to mainland Japanese food, but treating an American-influenced dish as somehow less local misses the point. Taco rice is part of Okinawan food culture. The Okinawa City tourism guide includes it among local food recommendations.

For more island food ideas, look for Miyako soba and seasonal fruit. Our hostel meal was a personal highlight, but I would not build a future food budget around a dinner that may not be offered to every guest.

The German Village: why it was not a highlight for us

We also visited the German Village on Miyakojima. At the time, some areas looked worn and the visit did not impress us. With limited time, I would prioritize the ocean activities and coastal scenery that we enjoyed more.

Adding Naha: history, nightlife and a different atmosphere

After my girlfriend returned to Tokyo for work, my friend and I continued to Naha. It felt busier and more urban than our island stops. I would add it for history, food and nightlife, rather than expect its city beaches to reproduce the quieter parts of Miyakojima.

We visited Shuri Castle while reconstruction was taking place. The castle’s history includes wartime destruction, but the rebuilding we saw followed the fire of October 31, 2019. Check current access before visiting because the areas open to visitors can change.

Our evening out included Churasun6 and trying habushu. Those separate articles cover the specific experiences. They are optional parts of the trip, not something every beach itinerary needs.

We also made an unexpectedly long walk toward American Village and rewarded ourselves with Korean BBQ. I remember it taking about three hours and forty minutes. Mihama American Village is in Chatan, outside central Naha. It is a substantial journey from Naha, so check a route from your actual starting point and use suitable transport.

The Naha beach we visited was crowded and noisy, which disappointed us after our snorkeling days. For a trip centered on beaches, I would give those days to Ishigaki or Miyakojima and use Naha for its city sights.

Weather, booking order and a realistic budget

Before paying for multiple island stays, compare flight routes and cancellation terms. Then reserve accommodation and transport, followed by ocean activities. I would book the first snorkeling outing early in the stay and keep another day flexible in case conditions require moving it.

Summer brings heat and typhoon disruption risk. The official typhoon guidance recommends monitoring updates and preparing for cancellations. Flights, ferries and sea excursions can be affected. During warnings, follow local instructions and keep away from beaches, even if conditions briefly appear calmer.

I do not have an itemized total from our trip that I can responsibly present as a current budget. Build your own estimate from live quotes, using the same number of travelers, nights and baggage allowance in each comparison.

  • Flights to Okinawa and each additional island, including bags.
  • Accommodation per room or per person, with the correct occupancy.
  • Car rental, coverage options, fuel and parking, or a taxi and tour-transfer budget.
  • Snorkeling or diving, including any equipment charges.
  • Meals, airport transfers and optional ferry excursions.
  • Extra accommodation if travel is disrupted.

For a shorter or tighter-budget trip, the easiest adjustment is usually to remove an island change. You keep more usable holiday time and avoid another round of airport transfers. For us, the ocean outings and hostel evenings were the parts I would protect first.

A simple packing checklist

  • A swimsuit, a towel and a change of clothes for the journey back from a tour.
  • Sun protection, a hat and drinking water for outdoor days.
  • A waterproof bag for valuables, and a separate bag for wet clothing.
  • Your booking confirmations and the exact tour meeting point saved offline.
  • Driving documents if renting a car. Ask the snorkeling operator which equipment is included before packing your own.

Ishigaki and Miyakojima FAQ

Is Ishigaki or Miyakojima better?

My choice would be Ishigaki for a varied trip with nearby island excursions, and Miyakojima for a beach-focused stay with scenic drives. Both offered excellent snorkeling on our trip. Choose according to your transport plans and interests rather than expecting guaranteed wildlife sightings.

How many days do you need for Ishigaki and Miyakojima?

I would allow about a week for both, including the transfer day. With only three or four days, I would choose one island. Add extra time if you also want Naha or a more flexible schedule. These are planning suggestions, not the exact length of our original trip.

Can you take a ferry between Ishigaki and Miyakojima?

Do not plan this transfer as a regular passenger ferry journey. We flew between the islands. Check flights for your dates before booking accommodation. Ferries from Ishigaki serve nearby Yaeyama islands such as Taketomi and Iriomote, which is a different type of island hopping.

Do you need a rental car on Miyakojima?

A car makes a beach and viewpoint itinerary easier. Without one, choose accommodation carefully and arrange buses, taxis or tours in advance. Confirm pickup points and return transport. Read my Japan car rental guide before booking.

Can you swim at Kabira Bay?

No. Swimming and snorkeling from the beach are not permitted at Kabira Bay. Visit for the views or a glass-bottom boat trip and choose a separate, permitted location for swimming.

Are turtles and manta rays guaranteed on snorkeling tours?

No. We saw turtles on our Miyakojima excursion, but wildlife sightings depend on conditions and the animals. Ask the operator about the actual itinerary, suitability for your swimming ability and cancellation policy.

Is Naha a good base for visiting Ishigaki and Miyakojima?

Naha is useful for a main-island stay or flight connection. It is on a different island, so I would stay on Ishigaki or Miyakojima for their beaches and excursions rather than commute from Naha.

What should you do if a typhoon affects your Okinawa trip?

Check airline and accommodation updates, follow local warnings and stay away from the coast during dangerous conditions. Sea activities and transfers can be canceled. Leave room in the itinerary for changes and check cancellation terms before booking.
