Renting a Dog in Shibuya, Tokyo: A Unique Experience for Dog Lovers

I live in Tokyo, love dogs, and have a girlfriend who does not want a dog. If you feel similar to me, this article here is perfect for you. There is actually an option to rent a dog for some hours and go for a walk in the Yoyogi Park. Iblike the Yoyogi park, since it is a calm and relaxing area within the Shibuya ward, which is normally famous for its nightlife and being crowded. So basically you can rent a dog at Dog Heart Shibuya and take them for a walk through one of Tokyo’s most iconic parks, without having the long-term responsibility of owning a pet.

I am totally aware that for some people this is controversial, Same as animal coffees. But if you live in Japan, you have to accept that they treat animals diffrent than we in Europe. For many people in Japan, dogs are more like an accessory than a family member. Still, Dog Heart looks ethical, and the people here seem really to care about the dogs. Also, if the dog does not like you, you can’t force him to come with you.

Dog Heart Shibuya is a popular dog rental service located in one of Tokyo’s most famous districts (Yoyogi Park for Dogs). Situated in the heart of Shibuya, this charming facility allows visitors to rent dogs for short periods of time and enjoy walking, playing, and bonding with them in a safe and fun environment. We used the service of Dog Heart twice, one of them I documented in the YouTube video which I linked above, and the second time was for my brother’s birthday. He really loves dogs, but can’t have one because of his lifestyle and job.

The service offers various breeds, including small dogs like Poodles and larger breeds. The first time we rented a Toy Poodle (Patora) and the second one a Beagle. Beagle was the favorite dog of my brother when we played long ago Nintendogs.

Be aware that the process can be different, but this was how we experienced it twice at Dog Heart. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

1. Visit Dog Heart Shibuya: Located in Shibuya, Dog Heart is easily accessible and situated in a convenient location for tourists and locals. The facility offers a variety of dogs for rent, and there are friendly staff members available to help guide you through the process.
2. Choose Your Dog: Dog Heart offers a selection of dogs, including Poodles, Dachshunds, and other breeds, depending on availability. You can interact with the dogs before deciding which one you’d like to take for a walk. If you’re unsure, the staff will assist you in picking a dog that matches your preferences. We also reserved the second time Vanilla-chan, but they had to make an exchange, since Vanilla-chan did not like rain.
3. Payment: Renting a dog costs approximately ¥3,800 for the first hour, with additional charges of ¥500 for every 15 minutes after that. The service is priced affordably, considering the fun and unique experience it offers. For u,s they were flexible to adjust as soon as we return.
4. Take Your Dog for a Walk: Once you’ve selected your dog, you’re free to take them for a walk in the nearby Yoyogi Park for Dogs, one of the best dog-friendly locations in Tokyo, or around the vibrant streets of Shibuya. It’s an exciting opportunity to explore the city with a furry companion by your side.
5. Return the Dog: After enjoying your time with the dog, simply return it to the facility. The staff will ensure that the dog is properly cared for before moving on to the next rental.

Exploring Shibuya and Yoyogi Park

Both times when we rented a dog, we were walking in Yoyogi Park. It is just the best place that you can reach by walking within 5 mins. Basically, you just have to cross 2 crosswalks and walk to the nearest entrance. You are not allowed to let the dog free. And you are also not allowed to access the Dog play park, since there are other dogs inside without leashes.

What to Expect:

We had two very cute dogs. Patora-chan had more of her free will than the Beagle we rented with my brother. She basically decides where we should walk. The first time we were in Spring and able to see the nice Sakura trees in Yoyogi park. During this time, you can sit on the floor and just enjoy the weather. The second time, it was during November and it rained. It is definitely more fun on a sunny day, but we did not had an other date for my brother’s birthday present.

If it rains, they give you a rain jacket for the dog. The beagle did not like it at all, so we removed it and let him play without the jacket. During the sunnyday a lot of Japanese interact with the dog and shouted as usual: Kawaiii!!!
