Bern: The Federal City & The Art of Slow Living

While Zurich is the engine of Switzerland, Bern is its soul. As a student who commuted here daily from Solothurn for my Bachelorโ€™s in Business and Computer Science, I learned that the secret to Bern is its pace. It is the seat of the Swiss government (the “Federal City”), yet it feels like a medieval village where time has slowed down just enough for you to enjoy a dip in the river.

The “Bรคrner” Way of Life

If you want to understand Bern, you have to understand the Aare River. It is the city’s lifeline and its ultimate playground.

The Aare Float: A Rite of Passage

Every summer, thousands of locals jump into the glacial-blue waters of the Aare. My complete guide to swimming in the Aare covers the best spots and safety tips.

Zurich has its own version of this culture, the lake and river Badis, which I cover in my Zurich Badi guide.

  • The Route: My favorite is jumping in at Eichholz and floating down to the Marzili pool.
  • The Gear: You’ll see everyone carrying “Aare-Bags” (waterproof dry bags) to keep their clothes dry while they float.
  • Pro Tip: The current is strong! Itโ€™s an exhilarating experience, but only for strong swimmers.

Education & Innovation in a UNESCO Setting

Completing my degree at the University of Bern gave me a front-row seat to how Switzerland blends tradition with tech.

  • The Lรคnggasse Quarter: This is the heart of student life. Located just behind the main station, itโ€™s filled with cozy cafรฉs and libraries.
  • The Tech Scene: Bern is home to a growing number of fintech and biotech startups, proving that you don’t need skyscrapers to build world-class software.
  • The Arcades (Lauben): Bern has 6 kilometers of covered shopping promenades. Even on a rainy day, you can walk through the Old Town without an umbrellaโ€”a feature I appreciated during many winter semesters.

A Pendlerโ€™s Guide to the City

Coming in from Solothurn every day, I mastered the art of the SBB commute. Here is how to navigate the city like a local:

  1. The Rose Garden (Rosengarten): Itโ€™s a steep walk, but it offers the iconic postcard view of the Aare loop and the Bernese Minster.
  2. The Zytglogge: The medieval clock tower is famous, but the real magic is watching the gears move from the inside (you can book tours for this).
  3. The Parliament Square (Bundesplatz): Stand in front of the Federal Palace and watch the 26 water jetsโ€”one for each Swiss canton.

Bern vs. Tokyo: A Cultural Shift

Transitioning from the relaxed, sandstone streets of Bern to the high-energy districts of Tokyo was a shock to the system. In Bern, people take the time to say “Grรผessech”; in Tokyo, the pace is set by the neon lights. Yet, both cities share a deep respect for public order and precision.

My time in Bern taught me the business fundamentals I now use in the Tokyo finance sector, while the “Aare-vibe” taught me the importance of a true “Feierabend” (the end of the working day).

Essential Bern Travel Facts

  • The Language: They speak “Bรคrndรผtsch”โ€”a slower, more melodic version of Swiss German.
  • Best Coffee: Check out the roasters in the Lรคnggasse for a caffeine hit before exploring the university.
  • Connectivity: About 35 to 40 minutes by train from Solothurn, and around 1 hour from Zurich.
